The Hula Girls - Hula! Hula! Bang! Bang!

You’re probably thinking, “The Hula Girls? Are they some Hawaiian infused Pop girl group?” No in fact, they’re four fellas from Costa Mesa, California; Spike Marble on guitar and vocals, Christian Kessler on upright bass, Doug Sanborn on the drums and Shorty Poole plays the steel guitar. But they do in fact have  the hula-a-go-go dancers, Miss Audrie Loraine and Miss Judy Luck who occasionally join them when they’re playing a bigger stage.

The Hula Girls play Hulabilly, which is a concoction of 50’s Rock ’n’ Roll/Rockabilly, Hillbilly, early 60’s Surf, and of course Hawaiian music that brings a refreshing sound to the music scene like a cold Mai Tai while under the sun.

They’ve released a two song single Hula! Hula! Bang! Bang!. Opening up with the title track, hitting you like a coconut falling from a tree to your head, okay enough of the island references. This is a real catchy number, and you seriously won’t stop singing “Hula Hula Bang Bang”. They’ve released a music video for their song “Hula! Hula! Bang! Bang!” and I can’t quite figure out why I love this music video so much. I mean the song is great, the band is rockin’, it’s colorful, but besides I don’t know why I love this music video, just something about it. Anyways... give it a watch!

The second and last song “Rock Around the Island” takes you back to those early 60’s beach parties. You’ll want to grab your surf board for this one or just leave the board on the sand and just jive on the sand. Another catchy one! These two songs are a lot of fun and the perfect listen to brighten your day.

You can purchase these songs here. And if these two songs aren’t enough for you, pick up their 2010 release “The Curse of the Tiki” while you’re at it!

So step aside Beach Boys, here comes The Hula Girls!

Alice Jayne - Introducing Alice Jayne
Rollin Records

Every once in a while there comes a singer/songwriter who comes out of nowhere and surprises you. Well this singer/songwriter comes out of North London and her name is Alice Jayne. She recently released a four song EP titled Introducing Alice Jayne and after hearing just one song, I had to get the rest and here’s what I thought...

The opening song “One Good Reason” is a cover of the 80’s song by The Keys. While the original song is quite good, Alice Jayne makes it her own with a nice twang to it and has all the elements to be a hit single. I can’t stop playing this song and I occasionally find myself singing the chorus over and over. After one listen, you too won’t stop singing along to the chorus. The second song is a cover of Bob Dylan’s “I Want You” and the first version of this song on the EP. This is labeled as the “mellowed out” version and it’s quite good. You’ll be mellowing out to this song while on a train. Again, like “One Good Reason”, you’ll almost forget it’s a cover song and everything here just works. The third song is “He Does It Right”, a much different version of Wilko Johnson’s “She Does It Right” and Alice Jayne and the band make this one a real rocker. The closing song is the second version of “I Want You”, Memphis Style. Now you’re probably wondering, is it better than the first version? In fact, I like them both equally and Alice Jayne makes it her own and I love the slight differences of both versions.

This is a very solid EP and just a sample of what to expect from this great talent! Download the EP on iTunes, and for the vinyl collector, pick up the record single at the Rollin Records online store.

Thanks to Chris from
Bopflix for introducing me to Alice Jayne. He directed her music video for the song “One Good Reason” which I recommend you watch right now!

Fia Sco & The Majestics - The Big Heat / You're My Sugar
Rhythm Bomb Records

Fia Sco & The Majestics released this two song 7" on Rhythm Bomb Records last year, but I'm review it now because I just discovered this band
from Vienna and feel they deserve a little attention.

On Side A, the first song "The Big Heat" is a hand-clapping, swinging number with no intro, we get right into the song. Fia's vocals put you into a time machine and take you back to an era between the 40's and 50's, like a mix of Peggy Lee and Janis Martin. You can say that about many Rockabilly and Swing bands today bringing the classic sound, but Fia Sco & The Majestics really feel like something from the era. This is a fun song that will definitely get you on the dance floor!

Turn the record over on Side B. The next song "You're My Sugar" brings you back a little further with the 40's Country / Western Swing / Hillbilly Boogie sound and again, you feel like you're there, maybe at a hootenanny and dancing on the barn dance floor. The steel guitar dominates the song and you can't help but wiggle your shoulders as Fia sings "you're my sugar, you're my baby". Not that I'm admitting I wiggle my shoulders, just saying one would to this song... anyways!

This is a band I would love to see play in the states, maybe at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend in 2016? We'll see!

Too bad this is only two songs (and Out of Print) but you're in luck, actually I too am in luck because the fine folks at Rhythm Bomb Records has Fia Sco & The Majestic's thirteen song album titled You're My Sugar (including "You're My Sugar" of course) which you can purchase at the online store. Fia Sco & The Majestics also released this year a new 7" single titled Boom Boom / Garbage! Pick that one up while you're at it.

Congratulations to TJ Mayes for signing with Wild Records!

I had a chance to catch him this year at Viva Las Vegas for Sweetpea's Hooch and Smooch and he killed it! A great musician who plays traditional Rockabilly. I'm looking forward to hearing the new record and catching him at Viva Las Vegas next year!

Here's a bit of his set from this year's Viva Las Vegas (filmed by Texas Tina)

Do yourself a favor and listen to his tunes (especially "Your Shadow Is My Shine", great song!), go see him at a show near you, and pick up his vinyl LP 'When Love Come Down!'. You won't be disappointed!

Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets - Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets
Rhythm Bomb Records

I’m two years late on this review as Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets self-titled debut album was released in 2013. If this were released today or I was reviewing this two years ago, this would be on top five of the year list. In my defense, I did just started listening to these guys and gal this year, so I'll add this on my top favorite list of 2015. Why is a favorite you ask? I’ll tell you why, just keep reading.

The opening song “Walk With Me” is a catchy bopper that gets you right from the start. Lead vocalist Carolina Rothmann and her bandmates Sebastian Rottmann on lead guitar, Stefan Dürrbeck on drums and Marco Maas on double bass aren’t fooling around when it comes to getting you on the dance floor with their sound. The next song “Turn Around Baby” is a down and dirty rockabilly number, and it helps when Carolina yells out “Yeee-haw!” and we bust into a nice rock ’n’ roll lick. They continue the down and dirty Rockabilly with “Be Mine”, and there’s almost a Grace Slick influence in Carolina’s voice, which really complements the Rockabilly sound. The next song “Rock The Bop”, and to make a confession, I’m actually in love with this song. It’s very catchy, to the point where you will be singing the song out loud in public especially every time Carolina does a Rockabilly hiccup after she says Bop, it really sticks in your head! The next song “Back Home” (which you can watch the music video by Bopflix), is a very atmospheric song with a nice guitar lick that has a great Western feel but keeps the Rockabilly sound we’ve been listening to so far. By this time I’ve come to the conclusion that Carolina has one of the best voices in Rockabilly, not just female voices, but in general. But we’re not finished yet, the next song “Treat Me Right” again keeps it going and has you back on the dance floor which then segue to two boppers “Can’t Stop Boppin’” and “Leave This Town”, which you’ll probably have a heart attack after boppin' to these two songs. But if you feel those last songs weren’t fast enough for you and looking for a real jive number, Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets speed things up with “Looking Up”. This song is the reason why we love Rockabilly music. “Waiting” is another rockin’ number, they keep the boppin’ going. Now it’s time to slow things down with “Give Me Love”, a song you would slow dance with your date at 50’s prom night. Not to get sentimental, but it’s quite a beautiful song and a nice change of pace after all the Rockabilly. Now that i’ve just said that, we’re back to the bop with “Knockin’ At My Door” and more down and dirty Rock ’n’ Roll with “Away With You” just to remind you what they do best. The last song “Darling Deal” is a feet-tapping, hand-clapping bluesy number with an in-your-face (or in-your-ear) harmonica that nicely closes out the album.

Not a single filler. Every song here is strong, diverse and just how I like my Rockabilly; great musicianship and a voice that shines. Rhythm Bomb Records really hit it out of park with signing Carolina & Her Rhythm Rockets from Germany and all the other great female artists such as Jai Malano, Ruby Ann, and Miss Lily Moe.

I highly recommend you pick this up at the Rhythm Bomb Records online store. While you’re at it, pick up their latest album ‘By My Side’ which I’m ashamed to say I do not own, so I too should pick that one up as well!

The Satellites - The Space Sessions
El Toro Records

The Satellites are described as a "Rock 'n' Roll quintet from outer space". I know what you're thinking, is this some band that dresses up as astronauts and/or aliens playing some weird concoction of Rock music that would be described as Space Rock or Space-A-Billy? In fact they're very sharply dressed fellas from well according to them they are from outer space so let's keep it that way. That shouldn't matter though because we're here to talk about the music. So let's talk about the music, okay? Ready, set, liftoff!

Opening with the song "Satellite Bop", it's a real catchy bopper and should get you on the dance floor in no time. If gravity can't bring you up, this song will. The next song "Ding Dong (Du - Wadi - Wadi)" is a boogie-woogie rock 'n' roll number that should keep you moving to the next song "Crazy Child", a surf rocker that will make you hop in your 50's Chevrolet (or spaceship for this matter) and cruise the night. Now you're probably getting a little tired from so much rock 'n' roll, so The Satellites were nice enough to slow things down (but not too slow) with the cover of "Farmer John", which has a very early 60's garage rock feel with a bit of the blues. It's a nice change of pace and keeps this album from feeling repetitive. Speaking of the blues, the next song "Keep Your Arms Around Me" goes way back to the early blues, it's a foot stomper and the nice bit of harmonica that really completes the song. "Pretty Linda" has a Buddy Holly-esque vibe to it, which I always like, and then they go back to the boppin' Rock 'n' Roll with "Baggie Maggie". "Betty Joe" mixes 50's Rockabilly with early 60's Rock 'n' Roll, and it has a raw quality (and I mean that in the best possible way), which really feels like a song from the period, in fact this whole album so far feels like a record someone bought at their local record store back in the late 50's. "One More Chance with You" brings back the blues with a little bit of honky-tonk. "Tiny Space Man" is a fun song, and reveals that these men could very well be from outer space and I could just see the video now; aliens and astronauts boppin' on Mars. The Satellites close out the album with "Wild Girl" which is a real rockin' tune, bluesy guitar licks and harmonica converge with this bopper and is a great call back to the previous songs we've heard.

What I really like about this album is its diversity, it never sticks with one sound yet doesn't stray away from what The Satellites are trying to accomplish; playing good Rock 'n' Roll for the people on earth.

Pick up this album at their El Toro Records online store. For the vinyl collectors, you can also pick up their 7" record

Check out their site for show dates in Germany, which they may or may not be from because I actually believe these guys are from outer space (hey, they said so themselves!) so don't let the ties fool you.

Slim Jenkins - Lamp Down Low

When you hear Voodoo Blues and Dark Swing, what do you think of? I’m sure many things but just to stay on topic, I think of San Francisco’s Slim Jenkins. I’ve been listening to these guys for a while and have caught them live a few times. They just released their newest album ‘Lamp Down Low’. So grab a scotch, sit back and let’s talk about it, shall we?

The opening track “Jet Settin’ Girl” gets to the point and by that I mean it’s going to get you off your feet and snapping your fingers. It’s a swing jazzy number and a great way to start things off. The next song “Cheating Heart” opens up very jazzy and for some reason I’m thinking of someone walking down a dark alley at night. Now is that a compliment? Yes it is, because this song has atmosphere. We continue on to “Six Feet Deep Or Mexico”, a latin-flavored swing number that will have you swing dancing and doing the salsa at the same time, especially if you’re drunk enough, or even sober. If you’re not exhausted yet, “Buttermilk” will keep you dancing, opens with a very gypsy-jazzy quick intro right into Slim Jenkin’s dirty swing sound. The instruments really shine in this song, I mean they shine on every song, but this one especially as everyone gets a little solo here and there. Speaking of instruments, we move on to “Mad Dog”, an instrumental where the entire band gets to be in the spotlight as Justin Oliver takes a break and Felix McNee’s drumming is in the forefront. Closing out the album is the song “Down In Heaven”, opening with a moody bass lick by Timothy Vickers. Then we’re hit with Byron Burchard’s sax as it creeps up on you. Joel Martinez’s plays a bluesy guitar solo, something you rarely hear in swing music these days and I like it. This is a solid album of six songs that will transport you back in time with a sharp suit, a drink in your hand and possibly a dame with a gun pointing at your heart.

Whether Slim Jenkins is playing at a Las Vegas casino, a dive bar in Marin County, or outside in front of hundreds of swing dancers at Union Square, San Francisco’s Slim Jenkins know how to get the place moving on their feet and ‘Lamp Down Low’ will have you dancing in your living room with these six songs of Voodoo Blues and Dirty Swing!

Make sure to catch Slim Jenkins at a show near you and pick up ‘Lamp Down Low’ while you're at it.

JD McPherson - Let The Good Times Roll
Rounder Records

Someone once said you’re only as good as your last album. 'Signs & Signifiers' from JD McPherson was the best album of 2012. Three years later, the anticipated new album 'Let The Good Times Roll' has arrived. So the question is, is it as good as his last album? Let’s begin.

We open up with the title track, “Let The Good Times Roll”. This a great opener, a Rock ’n’ Roll anthem , so far so good! The next song, “Bossy” is a unique song, it’s definitely a JD McPherson song but spanning many of his Blues influences. “It’s All Over But the Shouting” will have everyone strolling on the dance floor. The next song “Bridgebuilder” opens up slowly like a song from a David Lynch film but instantly JD McPherson’s soulful vocals come in, it’s almost Sam Cooke-like. We get back to the Rock ’n’ Roll with “It Shook Me Up”, probably my favorite on the album and makes you feel like you’re back in the heyday of good ol' days when music was good. “Head Over Heels” is another stroll number, and will get you clapping literally since there’s much clapping on this song. They slow things down with “You Must Have Met Little Caroline?” Will get the ladies to move their hips and the guys to keep their arms crossed because they’re too cool to dance. “Shy Boy” is a soulful/blues song with JD McPherson busting out a blues riff here and there. It’s the Blues theme for us shy guys. The next song “Precious” almost sounds like the beginning of a Bo Diddley song (which JD McPherson has covered at his live shows), but then we get a very beautiful guitar lick that comes in. JD’s soulful vocals come back and you forget how good of a singer he is. “Mother Of Lies” is a early 60’s-style rock number, with plenty of saxophone by Doug Corcoran. The closing song “Everybody Is Talking ‘Bout The All-American”, like the opening song, is another Rock ’n’ Roll anthem, and  a great way to close out 'Let The Good Times Roll'.

What I love about JD McPherson and his band is how they’re bringing back a familiar sound, yet it’s completely original. While many bands try to be so original, it’s confusing genre wise and all over the place and other bands are such copycats you can’t tell the difference, but JD McPherson and his bandmates; Jimmy Sutton, Jason Smay, Ray Jacildo, and Doug Corcoran bring a distinct sound and it shows on this new album. So to answer the question, is it as good as his last album? Is it better than 'Signs & Signifiers'? To be honest, I can't really give you an answer, but what I can say is that 'Let The Good Times Roll' is definitely on the list for one of the best albums of the year.

You can now buy the CD and the LP at their merch store, and make sure to catch JD McPherson and his band live because they’re on tour right now!

The Bop Hounds - The Bop Hounds

Ipojuke Records

I had a chance to catch The Bop Hounds when they played the car show at Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend. Awesome band, awesome guys, but to be completely honest; if they were to play next year, they need to play a smaller venue (such as The Bienville Room) where people can really appreciate these guys from Brazil!  Dastaev on lead vocals, Tijolo on the electric guitar, Cão on the acoustic guitar, Augusto on the upright bass and Andola on drums came together in 2013, and play straight up/stripped down Rockabilly, which is what we get from their EP, released last year.

The first song off their self-titled EP, “Get Your Cat Gone” is a perfect Rockabilly song to get in your car and hit the road. The next song “On Fire” should get the legs moving, pure Rockabilly with the energy of the Johnny Burnette Trio. The energy doesn’t stop there, with the song “All Over the Towns” is a Rockabilly anthem. “Lonely On The Road” is a twangy number for the broken hearted Rockabilly kid who hitchhikes his way back home. “Make It Snow, Santa” is an upbeat Christmas bopper which feels like a mix of Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Stray Cats. The next song (and my personal favorite) “Crossroads Of Her Heart” is a Rock ’n’ Roll love song in the vein of Richie Valens and Buddy Holly, while not sounding like either one, but something they both would’ve played in their heyday. The EP closes out with the song “Don’t Mess With The Cat” that comes right out of a Quentin Tarantino film, it’s a Wild West ballad, and a nice contrast from the opening song. If fact, this entire EP is the soundtrack to any road trip down the long desert road. Too bad it’s only seven songs, but it’s a taste of what’s to come from these guys!

This is where I usually tell you to go pick this one up, but you can actually download the entire EP for FREE at their website. So you don’t have any excuses!

Nico Duportal and His Rhythm Dudes - Guitar Player

Rhythm Bomb Records

When looking through the very long list of bands that would be playing the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend, one band name stuck out; Nico Duportal and His Rhythm Dudes. I don’t know, but I had to check them out before catching these guys live. All I can say was I was hooked from the start after a listen to their song “Real Rockin’ Papa” (which you can watch the music video here). These Paris-based rock ’n’ rollers play... well... Rockin’ early Rhythm ’n’ Blues; the way it was meant to be played.

When I heard Rhythm Bomb Records were releasing their new record, I was excited but realized I don’t own a record player (again, I know, what the hell?). Then later learned the same songs would be on CD plus more songs? So in a way it was a blessing in disguise! I had the chance to catch Nico Duportal (not with his Rhythm Dudes, but instead the Memphis Kings as his backing band) play two sets at Viva Las Vegas, both amazing! I immediately picked up the latest album titled “Guitar Player”, which is a fitting title since Nico himself does play guitar, and a mean one at that!

Okay, let’s get to the album shall we? The opening track “When I’m Gone” blasts into a drum roll and we’re hit with Nico’s guitar playing. It’s a scorcher of a song and a great way to open the album.

The album doesn’t slow down there, we move on to “Lost In The Game”, a real jive number! Bluesy riffs and a uptempo that should make an old geezer throw away his walker and start dancing. The next song “Polish Woman” is a groovy one (did I just say “groovy”?), well it will get you snapping your fingers. Again, the band shines in this one. Nico slows it down with a cover of John ‘Guitar’ Watson’s “Oh Baby”, and I would say Nico and the band do it justice. We keep the blues going with “Can’t Afford to Lose Her”, incorporating the harmonica, which gets as much attention as the guitar, I love it.

We tone down on the blues, but still keeping the R ’n’ B flavor, with “She Knows How”, a real catchy number. The song ends in another great guitar solo from Nico and slowly fades into the next song, “Real Good Lovin’ Tonight”. This one is swinging, almost has a Louie Prima vibe to it, but never strays away from the Rhythm ’n’ Blues. We get a cover of “Big Mary’s”, again another one that does it justice and should be in a detective or spy movie soundtrack. The next song, the title track “Guitar Player” is the most Blues song on the album, and the guitar really packs a punch in this one.

We get yet another cover song “Oh Oh” by Paul Gayten, I actually can’t find the original version to compare, but I dig this version a lot. The instrumental song “Josh & Slim”, where Nico can take a breather and showcase the whole band at their finest,
from Nico's guitar (obviously), to Alex Bertein and Arnaud Desprez's saxophone playing. Thibaut Chopin on the upright bass gets a nice solo in there, and the rhythm of Pascal Mucci's drums and Oliver "Red" Cantrelle on the piano keeps the rhythm going. This is almost like a farewell before we get to the last two songs.

“Much Later” is the last cover of the album and the cover the Ike Turner/Jackie Brenston song. I’m telling you, these guys pick the best songs to cover and know how to make it their own! The album closes with an unreleased version of “Polish Woman” It doesn’t sound much different, but I think I hear some bongos in there, a nice added bonus and a great way to end the album.

This could very well be in my top favorites of 2015 and I’m glad I picked this one up when I had the chance. All I can say is that Rhythm Bomb Records has released another hit! For those looking for some real Rhythm ’n’ Blues for the 21st Century, pick up “Guitar Player” at the Rhythm Bomb Records online store right now!

Here's a photo from Nico Duportal's show at Viva Las Vegas.

Sean Coleman & The Quasars - "I'm A Man"

People say Rock 'n' Roll is dead (and in a way it is with all the crap that comes out these days labeling themselves as Rock 'n' Roll), but after one listen of New York-based rockers Sean Coleman & The Quasars, you're going to think differently and feel that Rock 'n' Roll has never left.

Now I'll admit, I actually don't own this record as I don't own a record player (crazy, I know). However, I have heard all three of these songs and all I can say is (and excuse my French) but holy @#$%ing shit, this is good! This is how I like my Rock 'n' Roll to sound; no gimmicks, just great musicianship.

I had the pleasure of seeing these guys at the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend and they blew me away. Definitely one of the highlights of the whole weekend. With Sean Coleman's razor sharp vocals, the powerful riffs of Mick Hanson on guitar, thunderous saxophone by Jay McMahon, Jeff Feinberg constant energy on the bass, and Kevin Hudson pounding the skins like no other, this band is meant to be seen live!

The title track on Side A "I'm A Man" hits you like a ton of bricks, you immediately start bobbing your head and play air guitar (well that's what I would do). On Side B, the song "Count On Me" is a great stroll number and my favorite on the record. You'll be singing "Baby, baby, baby you can count on me" in your head all week. The last song "Ruckus Juice" is a booming number that should get you dancing on the floor and maybe start a couple of fights at the bar. Either way, this is a best way to close out the record. My only criticism is that it's not enough, I want to hear more!

If you're living or even visiting New York, do yourself a favor and catch these guys at a club near you, and pick up this record while you're at it.

Here are a couple of photos from their set at Viva Las Vegas.

Ricky Fabian - Pictures

Rhythm Bomb Records

I had the chance to catch Ricky Fabian on the last night of the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend this year in Brendan's Pub, where the room was filled with cigarette smoke. While I probably second-hand smoked about hundred packs that night, that didn't take away from enjoying a great performance by the Berlin born rocker. I picked up his latest album "Pictures" from Rhythm Bomb Records and have to say I haven't stop listening to it since I got back!

This album is twelve tracks of catchy Rockabilly in the vein of early Elvis Presley and Ricky Nelson. No frills, which is what I like, with bands today trying to be different and out there. It's nice to see a musician really bring a classic sound yet makes it his own.

The opening song "Believe In Me" is perfect for hitting the road. The female harmonies really compliment Ricky Fabian's voice, which would continue to the next song "Put A Spell on Me". We get a real rocker with "When I'm Gone" which I'm instantly reminded of Elvis Presley. Ricky slows it down with the next song "Hideaway Blues" featuring Ruby Ann. It's a Western ballad for when the sun goes down on a desert country road. With the next three songs  "Big Ole Bag", "Skinny Jeannie", and a cover of "Cindy Cindy" should get you moving on the dance floor, if not, you don't have a soul or two left feet, as long as you're clapping.

Things slow down with a cover of The Shirelle's song "A Thing Of The Past", which should make the ladies swoon. The next (and my favorite) is "Starlite", a beautiful, catchy love song that should be on the mix tape (or CD) for that one girl who would probably reject you anyway, but hey you made an awesome mix. Anyways… the next song "Try Again" is a twangy number that sounds very reminiscent of Johnny Burnette when he went solo.

For some reason, the next song "Julie Anne", much like "Starlite" hit me the most. While I don't know a Julie Anne, you can replace the name and pretty much brings you back to a nostalgic time when you had your first crush. The album ends with the ballad "Sunset Girl" featuring Cherry Casinothe perfect song to book end this album.

"Pictures" is the album you listen to after a perfect first date or a devastating break-up as you drive in your 50's cadillac down a long road and the sun begins to set.

Do yourself a favor and pick this one at the Rhythm Bomb Records shop and make sure to catch Ricky Fabian at a Rockabilly weekender near you!

Welcome to the Lost Highway

Hello folks, thanks for visiting! Here you'll get music and concert reviews from the latest in Rockabilly and Rock 'n' Roll, and maybe the occasional movie review if it fits the criteria (probably a movie starring Elvis Presley). Have a look around!
